Top 5 Common Men's Style Mishaps

There are many mistakes that men make when getting dressed. We all want to look better, but its much more effective to dress smarter. Here is our top 5 things to remember before heading out the door.

1. Think about your day

Think about what you are wearing and what kind of day you will be having. What kinds of clothes you need, Check on the weather to make sure what you decide to wear is appropriate. What kinds of activities are you going be to doing throughout the day? After the day is over, are you going out? Wearing the wrong things at the wrong times only makes you look unprepared and a fool. This even applies to dressing your age.

2. Know your sizes

The slim silhouette has been dominating in the fashion world lately and some men take it too extremely. Do not be that guy in the “schmedium”. When you are buying clothes, do not worry what size the tag says. Only care about how it fits you. Working in retail in the men’s department, I’ve scene a lot of men actually complain about how they are regularly a medium but they need a size or two up. Every clothing company has different sizing standards they use. Ask the sales associates opinions because they work there and know the clothes better than you or your shopping companions. You might be going for the slim and sharp look, but in reality you actually look like you are using your little brother’s clothes.

3. Not too many accessories

Some guys like to overly accessorize. From the bracelets, watches, necklaces, rings, hats, etc. Having too many accessories can be distracting. Going overboard can make you look like you are trying too hard. If you are wearing multiple accessories keep them subtle and have one main accessory statement piece. Don’t go overboard with the colors of your accessories. It can be overwhelming. The same can be said when its too gaudy. Less is more especially when you have to dress more formal.

4. No Matchy-Matchy

There is a fine line from matching and being too matchy-matchy. Break up your outfit with varying colors or patterns. Wearing a tie and a pocket square made out of the same fabric is very flat and one-dimensional. You don’t have to wear the same color in your shoes, belt, and tie. Think about the overall look to use patterns and color. Once you get comfortable with mixing and matching, you will realize how much more you wear your clothes. It maybe a full suit, but try mixing it with another suit pants in a similar fabric choice.

5. The Ed Hardy Effect

Neglecting a good capsule wardrobe of basics. Some guys just pile on all the current trends at once. Remember the days when people would be covered in Ed Hardy head to toe? The advantage of having a solid basic selection in your closet allows you to maximize the amount of looks you can create with just a few of the latest trends.
